Photographer discovered a live spider in the camera viewfinder, decided to “befriend” it

Through the viewfinder, photographers can visualize everything to make a great photo, but sometimes you will see something unexpected inside, for example… a spider. That’s what happened recently with Canadian photographer, Joel Robison.

Half a year ago, Joel bought a brand new Sony a7R III mirrorless camera. He has been using it regularly for the past 7 months, mainly in the UK and British Columbia, Canada. Joel said “didn’t go to any sites with a lot of spiders during that time.”

Spider in the viewfinder of a7R III

Joel first noticed something unusual about his camera on March 8.

“I was taking some photos indoors when I noticed something blurry, blocking the view through the viewfinder,‘ said the photographer. “I usually use the LCD monitor to access menus and to check the focus point, but this time when I used the viewfinder it was blocked. At first I thought it was just a lint or dust from the camera bag, but then it moved and I immediately looked away from the camera, and I saw the spider creeping into the corner of the viewfinder, behind the glass.

After that “shock”, Joel regained his senses and began to find out how the spider got in there. He could not find any explanation online for his situation, most other camera users only encountered spiders outside the camera, not in the electronic viewfinder, where it was almost “impossible” to a spider crawled in.

“According to my guess, the spider might have been hiding inside one of my lenses, and when I swapped lenses with the camera body, it crawled out and into the camera, then crawled into the viewfinder so it could towards a little light?”

No one knows how the spider got here

Another theory is that the spider eggs were inside the camera’s viewfinder before Joel bought it. According to Popular Science, this is a fact that often happens with cars, perhaps it happens on cameras as well.

Joel then spent about a week trying different ways to get the spider off the camera.

“I tried a few different ways after posting my story in a photography group,” I said. There were suggestions such as placing the camera without a lens near a lighted window to let the spider crawl out, or using an air blower to chase it out of the camera, but all were unsuccessful. Joel even reached out to Sony directly to see what the company would recommend.

Despite trying many ways, the spider still won’t leave

Joel says: “I ended up contacting Sony support, but they just responded as usual. They suggested that I send the machine to the center for cleaning and maintenance. I was hoping they gave a little more information about how the rather large spider could get into such a place.”

Sony touts the a7R III — a camera that costs almost $3,000 — as weather-resistant, and perhaps that means preventing spiders from crawling inside, as Lens Rentals once did the dismantling process. left the device and revealed that there was an opening in the base, but we can’t be sure this is how the spider got in.

Joel decided to live with this 8-legged “friend”

Now, despite receiving a lot of “internet style” advice such as destroying the camera, burning it, throwing it off a cliff, or burning it and then throwing it down to be sure, Joel decided to live with his spider “friend” new home and wait to see if it finds a new home. He will send the camera to a service center if the spider dies inside and Joel is continuing to use the camera.

“I’ve used the camera several times in the last week,” he said. “I’m not afraid of spiders, although I’m a bit nervous when I put my eyes directly on it”. As of March 18, the spider was still alive.

“I’m waiting for some superhero series to write and welcome me to their multiverse.”he joked.
