Do vitamins and micronutrients really help reduce COVID-19 mortality?

In a meta-analysis recently published in the journal Clinical Nutrition, researchers from the University of Toledo examined data from 26 different studies that focused on the role of vitamins — specifically, vitamin C, the vitamin D and zinc – in the treatment of COVID-19. It was evaluated on more than 5,600 patients COVID-19 hospitalize. In the end, they found that the vitamin did not reduce the patient’s risk of dying from COVID-19.

However, scientists also say that does not mean that vitamins are not necessary. Micronutrients nutrition such as vitamin C, vitamin D and zinc have long been touted for their immune-boosting properties. That’s why at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, some people saw them as a potential therapy.

However, of the three micronutrients above, vitamin D has shown some benefit in COVID-19 patients. It was found that vitamin D supplementation was associated with reduced rates of intubation and shorter hospital stays in COVID-19 patients, but more evidence is still needed to support those findings.

Instead of trying to supplement micronutrients, the researchers say it’s better to focus on a therapy that’s been shown to significantly reduce the rate of severe progression and death from COVID-19: a vaccine.

The message drawn from the above study

There is no reliable evidence that the use of vitamins and micronutrients will reduce the risk of disease or mortality from COVID-19. Unless the deficiency is prescribed by a doctor, people should not abuse them because of the potential for side effects or even vitamin toxicity.

Patients supplement with vitamin D when deficient (based on the results of examination and tests at the hospital) because it is good for bones, muscles, heart and immune system. People can consider adding fruits, vegetables, and other healthy foods health other.

In addition, methods should continue to be taken to reduce the scientifically proven rates of severe progression and mortality from COVID-19. Specifically, vaccination, along with wearing a mask and ensuring distance from areas with high transmission potential.
