Support pineapple consumption for export to Russia

There are no flights to transport, businesses are having to temporarily stop exporting vegetables and fruits to Russia, even though this is one of the 10 largest markets for Vietnamese fruits and vegetables.

Among agricultural products, fruit pineapple processed products of Vietnam are mainly exported to Russia, Ukraine and European countries. Pineapple is currently being planted in many provinces. For example, Muong Khuong and Lao Cai districts up to this point have nearly 1,400 hectares; in which, the area for harvesting from now to May is nearly 400 ha. In the current sunny weather, pineapples will ripen faster and the purchase will also require more urgency.

The capital of Lao Cai pineapple is in Ban Lau commune. From now to May, the harvest is estimated at 8,500 tons. Nearly a week ago, the purchase of pineapple was connected again, but the price was quite low.

In addition to supplying pineapples to the retail market of the northern provinces, Thinh Phong Cooperative – the main purchasing unit in Ban Lau, is also trying to put pineapples in supermarkets to raise prices for consumers. selected pineapple.

“I also find my way into the supermarket, but the requirements of the supermarket are also high. The procedure is more sophisticated. For example, selling to wholesalers, it is ok to just look at the item, but selling to the supermarket needs the growing area code. , certificate of food safety and traceability”, said Ms. Nguyen Thi Ha, Deputy Director of Thinh Phong Cooperative, Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai.

“Come here, the commune will continue to work with the cooperative as well as other departments and branches to continue to invite companies and focal points in the provinces to buy for farmers,” said Mr. Nguyen Van Mao, Vice Chairman of Ban Lau Commune People’s Committee, Muong Khuong district, Lao Cai province, said.

In addition to Muong Khuong, currently other pineapple growing areas in Lao Cai such as Bao Thang and Bat Xat have also entered the harvest season.

According to statistics from localities, the pineapple output of Lao Cai is nearly 42,000 tons. The main crop from now to the end of May is about 35,000 tons. Farmers said that if they sell pineapple in the field at about 4,000 VND/kg, they can break even.

According to the Import-Export Department (Ministry of Industry and Trade), tensions between Russia and Ukraine will continue to affect the export of vegetables and fruits to the Russian market.

In the first two months of this year, the value of fruit and vegetable exports to Russia reached nearly 10 million USD, up nearly 8% over the same period in 2021, but from March it will decrease sharply and the recovery time is unknown. Faced with this fact, businesses are currently implementing many solutions to reduce damage and have a new direction in the market.

Enterprises take initiative in market solutions

Currently, all pineapple production of Lao Cai province has been supported by Dong Giao Food Joint Stock Company, Ninh Binh until the end of the crop, with no output limit. On average, about 200 tons are transported to the processing plant every day. While businesses only focus on making canned pineapple products for the Russian market, the fact that this business has diversified pineapple products and has markets in 50 countries is the basis to solve the current difficulties.

As for Duy Anh Food Import-Export Co., Ltd., when goods could not be exported due to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, immediately the production shipments were changed to packaging designs for export to other markets.

The initiative of enterprises will contribute to minimizing risks when currently a number of Russian banks have been banned from international transactions, which will affect payment cash flows for fruit and vegetable exporters.

However, in the first two months of the year, the overall impact on the fruit and vegetable industry is not high because currently the proportion of fruit and vegetable exports to the Russian market accounts for nearly 2% of the total export turnover.

It is necessary to determine to continue maintaining the Russian market

Along with vegetables, Russia is also a market for many other agricultural products. According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, in 2021, the export turnover of Vietnamese agricultural products to Russia will reach about $550 million. In which, a number of items have significant export value such as seafood about 164 million USD, coffee 173 million USD, cashew nut 60 million USD.

Besides, Vietnam also imports from Russia and Ukraine many input materials for domestic agricultural production.

“If we can’t export to the Russian market, we can send it to another market, that is also a solution. However, which market has customers of that market. For example, if we move to another market Like the US, it will take a long time, it may take a lot of time, it may have to start from scratch. determined that the Russian market cannot be abandoned because this is one of the diverse markets, not too difficult,” said Chairman of the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association Nguyen Thanh Binh.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said it will closely monitor the situation, closely coordinate with industry associations and the State Bank to have timely support solutions for the exported goods.

In addition, the ministry will work with industry associations such as the Fruit and Vegetable Association, the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association, the Cashew Association, the Wood and Wood Association, and the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers.
