Died from hitting a crocodile in the middle of the road

AmericaBoth the male Florida driver and the alligator died after the driver hit a large animal lying on the highway.

The Hillsborough County, Florida, Sheriff’s Office said the accident occurred on the evening of March 24 when John Hopkins, 59, was driving when he hit a 3.3-meter-tall alligator lying on the highway. The collision sent Hopkins’ car off the road and overturned in a nearby ditch.

A passing driver saw the incident and called 911. When the police arrived at the scene, both Mr. Hopkins and the alligator are dead.

The sheriff’s office will open an investigation to determine what factors may have contributed to the crash.

It’s not clear where the crocodile came from, but the crash site is more than 3km from Alafia River Park, where crocodiles often roam.

The two states of Florida and Louisiana have the largest crocodile populations in the US, with Florida alone having 1.3 million wild alligators in 67 counties, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. The longest crocodile ever found in the state measured about 4.5 meters.

However, a representative from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office said a car accident involving a crocodile was “unusual”.
