Motorola rose to the top 3 largest smartphone companies in the US thanks to LG
In April 2021, LG officially announced that it would stop selling smartphones and this has created an opportunity for a number of other brands to develop. Specifically, in the US market, Motorola has climbed to the position of the third largest smartphone company, accounting for 10% of the market share, according to statistics of Counterpoint Research.
Counterpoint reports Motorola’s sales in this market jumped 131 percent in 2021 from the year before.
Motorola was the biggest phone company in the US in 2008, when feature phones were still dominating the world. However, this is the first time this brand has entered the top 3 in the smartphone market.
Also according to Counterpoint, Motorola is ranked 2nd in the smartphone market under $400 in the US. The biggest contributing factor to Motorola’s success in the US was LG’s withdrawal from the smartphone market.
Meanwhile, Apple and Samsung still held the highest market share in the US last year. With Apple accounting for 58% and Samsung accounting for 22%. Counterpoint predicts Motorola can grow further in the future, when more subscribers switch to 5G and users are interested in low-cost folding smartphones.
