The girl with “petrified bones” on the journey back to normal life
At the end of October 2021, the patient had surgery at E Hospital, Hanoi, this is also the first case of petrified bone disease performed in Vietnam. After nearly 6 months of surgery, the patient is preparing for the next surgery.
Nearly 6 months after the first surgery on the right hip joint, the patient’s walking is much easier than before. The patient was able to walk normally and be active in daily activities without further assistance. Recently, the patient was able to go back to Hanoi alone for a re-examination.
Patient Hue shared: “I can now do my daily activities by myself. When I walk, my hip no longer hurts. I feel very happy.”
Doctor Nguyen Dinh Hieu, Deputy Head of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine said: “After the first total right hip replacement surgery, the patient’s right joint range of motion has improved. The improvement was very good. Most importantly, the pain was resolved. Previously, the patient’s limb difference was about 5cm, now it is almost normal. The patient’s next problem is to solve the left hip joint.”
From a place of only walking about 200m, now the patient can walk about 500 – 600m without feeling tired of the legs. To prepare for the second surgery, it is expected that in a few days, the patient will be hospitalized. The procedures to be done will still be the same as the first surgery, pain will certainly be there, but the patient always tells himself that he will do his best.
Patient Hue said: “Before, when I did the first surgery, although the doctor told me already, but when I experienced it, I found it very painful. This second time, it will also hurt, but I will try”.
According to Dr. Nguyen Dinh Hieu, the patient’s second left hip surgery has an easier prognosis, because clinical examination of the joint’s range of motion is not too limited.
There is still a long way to go, but the patient does not give in to difficulties. Because if the surgery is successful and the recovery is good, the patient’s wish for the future will be that the patient’s two sisters who also suffer from this disease will have the opportunity to return to a normal life like everyone else…
