Jail for father who sold his daughter for 100 million dong

Nghe AnLo Pho Pheng, 47, thinks that his family is in trouble and has no money for medical treatment, so he hands over his 13-year-old daughter to a group of people traffickers.

On April 14, the People’s Court of Nghe An sentenced defendant Pheng (residing in Bao Nam commune, Ky Son district) to 14 years in prison for the crime of Trafficking in people under the age of 16. For the same crime, Moong Thi Xom (46 years old, resident of Huu Kiem commune, Ky Son) received 13 years in prison and Lo Thi Cam (35 years old, resident of Huu Kiem commune) received 12 years in prison.

Pheng has a history of heart disease. In 2018, the disease recurred but there was no money for treatment, so Pheng met Cam and asked him to find a match to sell his 13-year-old daughter to China.

Accepting this man, Cam discussed the plan with Xom. Pheng’s daughter was then brought to China by Xum and another person to sell to a local man for over 150 million VND.

Pheng then received 100 million dong from the sale of the baby; Xom gets 7 million VND and Cam gets 13 million VND. At the end of 2021, the victim returned to Vietnam and denounced the human trafficking group.

At the court, Defendant Pheng said that the difficult, needy and lack of awareness should have committed the crime. Present at the court, the victim asked to reduce the punishment for the accused as the biological father.
