Lake Titicaca is the largest lake in South America, Titicaca has become a tourist attraction with islands made of reeds. This man-made island can be moved, making visitors extremely excited.
Located at an altitude of about 3,811 m above sea level, Lake Titicaca lies on the border of Peru and Bolivia. This place attracts attention with islands made from reeds.
Specifically, several hundred Uros – a pre-Inca tribe – lived on islands made entirely of reeds floating in the middle of Lake Titicaca. They call these artificial islands totora.
The whole totora is plaited from reeds. On each of these special islands, more than a dozen people from many different families live together.
About once every 6 months, the people of Uros cut reeds and sedges to replenish the surface of Totora Island because the reed layer below the water surface is rotting causing the island to float and sink.
Thanks to the continuous plaiting of layers of fine reeds, the floating island of the Uros people can float on the lake surface for 30 years.
Therefore, the floating islands on Lake Titicaca can change size frequently and can be moved if there is strong wind.
Not only creating a unique floating island, the Uros people also use reeds to make boats and many daily items.
All people’s activities take place on totora. In particular, the cooking of water is also on the floating island.
People carefully place stones under the reeds and then start a fire to cook food. Thanks to this, the Uros totora were safe from fire.
The Uros people live by fishing, weaving, hunting seagulls, mallards… In particular, they have a large income from tourism.
