Microsoft Defender loses 40% of its “power” when working offline
According to the test results performed by AV-Comparatives, Microsoft Defender works less effectively when there is no network connection. In testing by an organization that specializes in testing anti-virus software, Microsoft’s tool was far behind Avast and Bitdefender when performing tasks without an internet connection.
AV-Comparatives tested using 10,040 samples of malware, including recent popular software that is endangering users. Malware variants were also aggregated to build a more complete database.
Here are the results:
While Defender works great when connected to a network, it can’t detect nearly 40% of malware offline, likely because the tool is cloud-dependent. This makes Defender the third worst offline antivirus solution on the entire list.
Meanwhile, G Data was able to detect 98.6% of threats while offline, and Total Defense, VIPRE, Bitdefender, all got 97.8%.
Testing was conducted in early March 2022 with a fully updated 64-bit Windows 10 device.
