Pham Minh Phong “surpassed” the national golf player

This morning (April 20), 138 leading professional and amateur athletes (119 male athletes, 19 female athletes) in Vietnam entered the first competition day of the 2022 National Golf Championship – VinFast Cup.

The weather at Vinpearl Golf Hai Phong is very nice, helping golfers go through 18 holes very smoothly and quickly. Many big surprises happened on the first day of competition, in which the top two groups of men and women were monopolized by amateur golfers.

In the men’s group, golfer Pham Minh Phong was the only one to achieve a negative score in round 1 with a result of 69 strokes.

Starting on route 1, the 37-year-old golfer from Quang Binh showed a stable performance with 2 birdies (completed 1 hole less than 1 stroke compared to the standard number of clubs) and did not suffer any bogey (the opposite compared to the standard number of clubs) with birdie, that is, the golfer completes 1 hole more than the standard number of strokes) after the first 9 holes.

9 holes later, Minh Phong even got 2 bogeys, but made up for it with 3 birdies, including an impressive birdie stroke at hole 18 to set a -3 stroke round.

Born in 1985, with a handicap of 3.0, Pham Minh Phong is a famous amateur golfer in the Central region. Not only competing in domestic amateur tournaments, Minh Phong has participated in many international tournaments with impressive achievements.

In second place with evenpar points (72 strokes)/18 holes are golfer Nguyen Van Quang and defending champion Lexus Challenge 2022, 15-year-old national player Nguyen Anh Minh this year.

The young golfer born in 2007 had a bad start when he got 2 positive clubs after only the first 3 holes and maintained that score for the first 9 holes.

In the second half, Anh Minh caught one more bogey on hole 10, before having 3 birdies in a row from holes 11-13 to reach even par.

The big surprise in the men’s group was the poor performance of the runner-up of the Lexus Challenge 2022, Truong Chi Quan. The golfer born in 1998 suffered 2 double bogeys and 3 bogeys to finish round 1 with 79 strokes (+7), thereby temporarily ranking at 43rd.

Truong Chi Quan will need to quickly restore his spirit to improve the existing results in the next few days of competition to achieve the championship goal set before the tournament.

In the women’s group, with the unstable performance of the No. 1 candidate for the championship, Nguyen Thao My, created an opportunity for Vietnamese golfer Doan Xuan Khue Minh to temporarily monopolize the top spot. The 2017 National Women’s Amateur Champion successfully scored 2 birdies and 3 bogey points to end her day with a record of 73 strokes/+1, creating a 3 stroke difference from Thao My (76 strokes).

The second day of competition of the National Championship 2022 – VinFast Cup will continue to take place tomorrow with 2 competition sessions, the morning starts at 6:30 and the afternoon starts at 11:30.
