Bacardi Says Hundreds of Cognacs Disappeared From American Airlines Flights

Alcohol giant Barcardi said on Tuesday that American Airlines failed to pay for hundreds of cases of Cognacs that disappeared from a flight between Paris and Los Angeles last year, according to a lawsuit filed in federal court today. Tuesday.

A Florida-based Bacardi USA attorney has ordered the airline to pay the $65,820 he believes the bottles are worth, according to documents filed in US District Court in Southern California.

Twenty-four pallets containing 1,680 barrels of French spirits were loaded on the September 20 flight, the package said. But more than six pallets – or 420 crates – didn’t make it through.

It’s unclear if the alcohol was stolen or misplaced, but American Airlines paid “no part” of the bill – even though it was “properly claimed,” the lawsuit states.

It is not clear what type of Cognac was on the flight or how many bottles were in each case. A company attorney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

American Airlines also did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bacardi, which claims to be the largest privately held liquor company in the world and owns dozens of brands of alcohol, start selling spirits from Cognac, France, in the United States a decade ago.
