Mariupol situation: Chechen fighters celebrate victory, claiming control of Azovstal ‘fortress’

Video widely shared on social media shows Chechen fighters celebrating victory in front of a burning building in the strategic Ukrainian port city. The chief declared that they had fulfilled the orders of the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.
On the same day the video appeared, Russia’s state news agency TASS reported that Chechen fighters in a unit named Kadyrovtsy (named after leader Kadyrov) took control of Ukraine’s Azovstal steel plant, also located in Mariupol.
The head of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, told TASS that the steel mill and surrounding lands were controlled.
“Mariupol is ours! The city has been decisively and completely controlled… The strategically important administrative building of the Azovstal factory has been controlled, and all neighboring territory has been controlled. cleaned up,” Kadyrov told TASS.
Mr. Kadyrov further revealed that Ukrainian soldiers were “blocked” under concrete underground tunnels inside the factory.
The Chechen leader also stressed that they were ordered not to cause civilian damage, but needed to eliminate a threat. So the missions in Mariupol were doubly difficult.
“Response measures were conceived and then implemented in the shortest amount of time,” Kadyrov stressed.
