Mazda uses a controversial engine to… as a booster for a new engine

The rotary engine – one of the most unique features of Mazda sports cars in the past has just been officially confirmed again but no longer serves the old purpose.

More bitterly, this engine does not directly contribute to the powertrain, but only acts as a generator for the Mazda MX-30 all-electric SUV. When it was discontinued in 2012, this engine was still the heart of the RX-8 sports car line at that time.

Thanks to its small size (one of the many advantages of a rotary engine so far), this option makes a generator more efficient than a conventional engine on a rechargeable hybrid vehicle when it is both easier to arrange and does not have much impact on the total vehicle weight.

It is temporarily unclear what the operating range of the Mazda MX-30 will be when a new generator is added.
