The underground rules of the adult karaoke world in Singapore

The weekend during his military service was the first time Michael (character’s name has been changed) had a taste of the fun at KTV (a kind of karaoke bar).

“We seem to think too much about sex. In the camp, we often talk about where to go for the weekend,” said the 40-year-old man. In Michael’s words, “you’ll definitely get a girl even if you’re not handsome”.

The girls he mentioned were hostesses, who were paid to chat and drink with male customers. According to estimates by CNA, before Covid-19, there were at least 600 karaoke bars operating in Singapore, but because of the distance, all were closed like other nightlife establishments.

Now, with the reopening of all nightlife businesses, all eyes are on the industry to see if it can recover. However, the future of KTV in Singapore remains uncertain. Since the outbreak of the pandemic, flight attendant services, which are the main business of the industry, have been banned.

Under the program Undercover Asia, the KTV system in Singapore is governed by strict rules. For example, flight attendants have to timekeeping, can go in and out of multiple rooms per night, and can only spend 15 minutes per customer. What they do during that time depends on the type of KTV of the shop.

At low-end KTVs, the hostess will only drink with guests and chat. The tip is about 30 Singapore dollars (about 500,000 VND). “They’ll listen to your complaints, and then at most you can just ask them out to dinner and then say goodbye,” says Michael.

At a higher level, the hostess drinks and interacts with business customers. They can get tips up to 500-600 Singapore dollars (equivalent to 8.3-10 million VND).

Michael said he has witnessed men splash tens of thousands of Singapore dollars on room rates, drinks and tips for “handrails” to impress business partners.

“Hostesses need to be smart to talk to the rich. If you talk to a guest’s business partner, put them at ease and sign a contract, the tip will be $2,000, not $600. la,” Michael said.

How much a hostess can earn also depends on her age, Michael added. Normally, in the high-class theater room, if the girl is beautiful enough and knows how to dress, she will only earn a lot until the age of 25. After that, they will be pushed to a lower rank.

At mid-range KTVs, the average tip for a tip is S$50 and a hostess can earn S$300 in tips a night. However, with this $50, what a customer can buy, such as a kiss or physical touch and more, is up to each theater.

According to the government of Singapore, these karaoke bars are not brothels. While some hostesses may offer sexual services for money, all such meetings must take place outside the theater.

Michael said: “First, everyone will toast and talk to each other. Once the wine has soaked, the hostess will ask the guest, ‘Would you like to go somewhere more intimate?’ A hostess can get 6-7 men in one night. All are willing to pay the same price, but she will choose the one she has more feelings for.”

However, not everyone comes here to satisfy their sexual needs. Many people just need companionship and companionship. “Some people can’t stand being lonely. When something’s bothering them, they come here to have someone to share it with, to have someone hug them and tell them everything will be okay,” Michael said.
