Japan discovered giant sea monster washed ashore

Japanese media reported that at around 10 a.m. on April 20 (local time), people living near Ugu beach in Obama city, Fukui prefecture, encountered a “giant sea monster” floating drift into shallow water.

Upon closer inspection, one realized it was a giant squid, and this was described by the local government as “a rare sight”.

Japanese fishermen have caught a “giant sea monster” drifting into shallow water.

The Mainichi news newspaper quoted a local official as saying that it was unusual for a giant squid (alive) to wash up on the beach. “It is strange and rare for a giant squid to wash up on the shore and still be alive,” a representative of the local official told this newspaper.

Then, the video – capturing the moment a large squid was swimming in shallow water on the beach when two experts took measurements – was posted on Twitter. It immediately received the attention of netizens with hundreds of thousands of views.

Currently, this sea creature has been transported to Echizen Matsushima Aquarium in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture (Japan). Experts say that giant squid of this length usually only live in the deep sea.

An oceanographer said: “It’s very difficult to find giant squid near the coast because they live in the deepest part of the ocean, thriving in areas about 650-900m below sea level.”

However, in the past, there was a time when people caught giant squid drifting ashore. For example, in 2020, a giant squid washed up on a beach in South Africa. Another giant sea creature was brought out of the water by scientists in Japan in 2006. According to National Geographic at the time, the animal was 7.3m long.

In 2020, a giant squid nearly 3m long (dead) was also discovered washed up on the west coast of Japan. The Japan Maritime Administration in Odashukuno, Kyoto Prefecture, said that it is very rare to see giant squid in this area. In the past 20 years, they appeared only about 5-6 times.

Giant squid, also known informally as “ghost squid”, may include eight species. They are recognized as being up to 13 meters or 10 meters in length, usually living in the deep ocean in the North Atlantic and North Pacific Oceans from the coast of Mexico through the Hawaiian Islands to the Ogasawara Islands (Japan).

In June 2019, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) released extremely rare footage of a giant squid in the waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The short, 28-second video shows the animal moving towards the camera. It appeared to wrap its long tentacles around the NOAA camera lens before swimming away rapidly.
