“I was born in a poor village in Thai Nguyen. At that time, my family conditions were still difficult, so when I was 15 years old, I had to give up my dream of going to school. In order to have more income to cover her life as well as realize her dream of “escape from poverty”, Ms. Ha has enlisted to cook sticky rice to sell sidewalks with a capital of only 3 million dong.
In the first days of selling sticky rice, Ms. Ha had to get up at 1 a.m. to prepare ingredients. At 6 a.m., she brought a box of sticky rice to the sidewalk 3km from the hostel, selling sticky rice while taking advantage of bringing books to study. She sells sticky rice until 10 am, then returns to dinner, rests and goes to school again. Initially due to lack of experience, Ms. Ha had to eat sticky rice many times except rice. Gradually, she also had an income from selling sticky rice. Although it is not much, it helps her to make ends meet.

Ms. Ha confided: “Slowly, I switched to giving up wholesale sticky rice. From 70, 80 to 100 sticky rice cakes sold, I cried tears of joy because I could hold the hard earned money. There were days when I stayed up all night. to make enough orders and then roaming around in an old car all over Saigon to deliver sticky rice. To the point that I was severely sleep deprived, I went to delivery and my eyes fell. As a result, I crashed my car into someone else. Those are the days I really can’t forget.”
When the job gradually stabilized, Ms. Ha began to hire more helpers to cook sticky rice and hire delivery people. The next difficulty was the flower catching part, I practiced day and night forgetting to eat and forget to sleep but the flower was not beautiful.There were many times when I wanted to give up because I couldn’t catch the flower as I wanted, I practiced so persistently that the Knuckles hurt so I can’t bend my hand.”

Making bean sticky rice has become Ms. Ha’s main job and provides her with a stable source of income. Even her husband quit his job as a carpenter to help his wife sell sticky rice.

Talking about the work of making sticky rice with bean flowers, Ms. Ha said: “I usually make sticky rice with flowers and beans from 2-3 am to 8-9 am when delivered to customers, then I rest. Big day of worship , the demand from customers to offer sticky rice with flowers and beans is high, I have to work around the clock to deliver the goods early.The most memorable memory is December 23, the number of orders is too much, I can’t make it in time, 2 days I start 500 flowers in a row, my joints were swollen and I couldn’t move, I had to resort to pain relievers, then after 10 days my hands were back to normal. After that time, I remember that life didn’t dare to accept many orders of sticky rice and beans anymore.”
