TikTok continues to surpass Facebook, Instagram

TikTok is one of the fastest growing social networking platforms in the world. Research firm Sensor Tower has released its report for the first quarter of 2022, revealing the most downloaded apps during this period. A year earlier, total TikTok downloads surpassed 3.5 billion, becoming the fifth app to achieve this feat.

Since the beginning of 2022, TikTok has been downloaded more than 175 million times. As of 2018, no app has surpassed TikTok in terms of downloads. There’s much to be said about TikTok’s success and the way to go. Chinese apps dominate thanks to trendy content, unique algorithms, and diverse communities. Recently, TikTok upgraded and added an interactive widget for in-feed ads as well as testing a “dislike” comment button.

In terms of downloads on iPhone and iPad, the rankings of the top 5 applications have not changed in the past 3 quarters. TikTok surpassed 70 million downloads on iOS in the first quarter of 2022 thanks to 11% growth in Asia. Although banned in India, one of the market the largest in the world, the app is still number three in Asia and number one on the App Store.

In the US, TikTok ranked first since the first quarter of 2021. The last app to beat TikTok was Zoom in April 2020. Also from the first quarter of last year, TikTok and YouTube were the top two apps on the US App Store. TikTok also took the No. 1 position on Google Play in the US with a 19% increase in downloads.

Sensor Tower’s report is based on download data on iPhone, iPad, and Google Play from January 1 to March 31, excluding pre-installed apps and external app marketplaces.
