According to a press release from Deutsche Bahn, the Mireo Plus H is powered by clean hydrogen fuel and emits no greenhouse gases, releasing only water and steam instead. The vehicle will eventually replace diesel-powered wagons.

The use of hydrogen in rail transport is part of a German government project to “electrify 75% of the railway network by 2030”.

According to Michael Peter, CEO of Siemens Mobility, each train delivered will save up to 45,000 tons of CO2 over 30 years compared to corresponding car journeys. They will have a range of up to 800 km with two cars and 1,000 km with three cars, for a top speed of 160 km/h.

Deutsche Bahn helped develop a service station capable of refueling hydrogen-powered trains as quickly as diesel-powered trains.

The Mireo Plus H will begin testing in the state of Baden-Württemberg, southwestern Germany, in 2023 and aim to be commercially operational from 2024 between the cities of Tübingen, Horb and Pforzheim.

With the move, Siemens is trying to catch up with French competitor Alstom, which has already brought to market hydrogen-powered passenger trains with 41 orders in two German states, in addition to trials. took place in Austria, Great Britain, Poland, Sweden and France.

Alstom and energy company Engie will also develop powerful cargo locomotives powered by hydrogen fuel cells in the near future.
