Successfully tested unmanned aircraft in a natural environment

The results of the experiment were published in the May 4 issue of Science Robotics. The purpose of the experiment is to evaluate the ability to cross terrain, adapt to new environments, and avoid the risk of collisions of unmanned aerial vehicles.

According to Enrica Soria, a robotics expert at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne, this is the first time Unmanned aircraft Tested in a completely natural environment. The results of the test are really impressive.

In the past, drone tests were usually conducted in an open, obstacle-free environment or, if available, pre-programmed.

The drones in this test are palm-sized, equipped with depth and altitude cameras and an onboard computer. The biggest advancement of this experimental drone is the possession of an intelligent algorithm that helps to avoid collisions, fly efficiently and coordinate with the aircraft in the fleet.

Because it does not rely on any external infrastructure, such as the global positioning system (GPS), this fleet of drones is highly applicable, which can be used to support the public. Search and rescue in natural disasters, map making, serving conservation work…

These drones are expected to be officially put into service in the next few years. In the immediate future, scientists need to expand testing in dynamic environments such as cities, where there are high concentrations of people and vehicles to minimize potential risks.
