Vietnam won another silver medal in diving
HanoiMai Hong Hanh – Ngo Phuong Mai scored the second highest among the three teams in the women’s 3m soft doubles final at the 31st SEA Games on the afternoon of May 9.
Hong Hanh and Phuong Mai scored 237.57 points, 8.16 points more than Singapore’s Ashlee Tan Yi Xuan – Fong Kay Yian. The Malaysian pair of athletes Ng Yan Yee – Ong Ker Ying continued to show their superiority in the competitions, winning the gold medal with a total difference of 276.30 points.
“We just set our sights on winning a bronze medal, but we didn’t think we would play so well,” Phuong Mai shared after the competition at My Dinh Aquatic Palace. “Personally, I am very touched to change the color of the medal at the SEA Games. I have been looking forward to this for a long time.”
Phuong Mai won bronze medals in all three recent games in 2015, 2017 and 2019. Yesterday, she also finished third in the women’s 1m softball singles event.
Although she could not overcome Ng Yan Yee – Ong Ker Ying, the 23-year-old athlete affirmed that after this home match, she and her teammates had learned many lessons to look forward to the next competitions.
Before the women’s final, six athletes from four delegations Vietnam, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia competed in the men’s 1m softball final. This is not the strength of the home team, although the main representatives are still The Anh and Tung Duong.
And the results clearly reflect that, when Vietnamese athletes achieved the lowest results. The Anh finished six jumps with a total score of 248.25 and was penultimate, with 230.10 points above Tung Duong. In the last contest, Tung Duong – once ranked fourth at the 30th SEA Games – even got 0 points for making a mistake of touching his back when receiving water.
Ooi Tze Liang (Malaysia) achieved 377.70 points and won a gold medal, ahead of Avvir Pac Lun Tham (Singapore, 286.40 points) and Betrand Rhodict (Malaysia, 284.90 points).
Diving will be played for two more days. The women’s singles 3m soft bridge, men’s doubles 10m hard bridge took place on May 10, while the men’s singles 3m soft bridge and women’s doubles 10m hard bridge took place on May 11.
Diving is one of the three disciplines of water sports, besides swimming and diving. Seven sports teams, including Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam, competed in eight events.
The Vietnamese diving team attended the tournament with nine athletes, including Ngo Phuong Mai, Mai Hong Hanh, Nguyen Phuong Anh, Nguyen Tung Duong, Do Tuan Minh, Phuong The Anh, Dinh Anh Tuan, Nguyen Quang Dat, and Dang Hoang Tu.
After two days, the diving team brought home three medals for the Vietnamese sports delegation. Besides Phuong Mai’s singles and doubles medals, there was a silver medal in men’s 3m softball doubles by Nguyen Tung Duong – Phuong The Anh.
