Orbital Assembly company in Fontana, California shared the design of two new space stations used to welcome space tourists, expected to operate as early as 2025.
The Gateway Foundation company introduced the idea of building a space hotel in 2019. Their goal is to create a place away from Earth with offices and rooms for visitors. The Pioneer station can accommodate 28 people when it opens to passengers in 2025. The other station is Voyager, scheduled to open in 2027, which can accommodate 400 people. “Our goal is to bring more people to live, work and thrive in space,” said Tim Alatorre, chief executive officer of Orbital Assembly, the company in charge of building the two space stations.
The smaller station Pioneer allows people to begin experiencing space on a larger scale and faster. Pioneer also has research facilities for rent. Both stations have a wheel-like shape with artificial gravity, allowing visitors to move freely at each station. The Pioneer station will consist of five modules built around a revolving “gravity ring” structure.
At both Pioneer and Voyager stations, visitors can experience zero gravity but can still use cups to drink water and do not need to use a belt to sleep in bed. Near the center of the station there will be no artificial gravity. However, gravity will gradually increase as it moves further and further away from the center. Although Pioneer station is smaller than Voyager, visitors can bathe and eat in the gravity zones. Each station is furnished like a luxury hotel on Earth.
One major barrier to space travel is cost. However, Orbital hopes the cost of space travel will become cheaper and cheaper. “When you go to space, people will change the way the Earth is seen. Space tourism is still in its infancy. We are excited to be able to contribute to making this a reality and improving lives. live on Earth,” Alatorre said.
