Treat physiological weakness without drugs

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has long been used to treat physiological disorders, including sexual or reproductive health problems.

Chronic stress, frequent staying up late, unhealthy diet, eating foods that are too salty or too sweet, not drinking enough water and the habit of holding urine are the causes of sexual dysfunction, Gabriel Chan, M.D. Traditional Chinese Medicine from Oak Health Chinese Medicine in Singapore, said.

Traditional Chinese medicine can solve some sexual health problems such as irregular menstruation, infertility in women and erectile dysfunction, decreased libido or premature ejaculation in men. According to Dr. Chan, the three organs responsible for sexual health are the digestive tract, liver and kidneys. “The damage in the digestive tract results in a lower rate of nutrient absorption, which in turn causes malnutrition in other organs,” he said. The most debilitating organs are the liver and kidneys, leading to sexual dysfunction.

According to traditional Chinese medicine, liver qigong can become stagnant (obstructed) due to stress or anxiety. Stress is believed to be a major cause of sexual health problems. Stress affects the liver, when liver qi is stagnant, blood circulation around the muscles is poorer. This weakens the kidneys, giving rise to symptoms of sexual dysfunction. To alleviate symptoms, we must replenish weak organs or clear stagnant ventilation, explains Dr. Chan.

Troy Sing, a doctor at Wise Chinese Medical Consultancy, Hong Kong, said that gas stagnation is closely related to diseases of female physiology. For example, the ancient Chinese believed that women often experience sexual frustration more because they are subjected to different sexual standards than men, and cannot express the same sexual desires as men. . Women are also thought to be more prone to loneliness and depression, especially after being widowed.

Traditional Chinese medicine experts, who understand the relationship between mind, body and diseases, suggest that sexual dysfunction and emotional stress in women are the result of experiences disappointing experience in the past.

“But now, after many centuries, we realize these problems are the result of social pressure, not just biological,” said Dr. Sing.

To solve sexual health problems, doctors often use three common methods: scalp acupuncture, body acupuncture, cupping and herbal medicine.

Scalp acupuncture targets different parts of the brain, helping to heal affected organs, says Dr. The brain is believed to be the body’s main healing center. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners target acupoints on the scalp to address the pathology.

In total body acupuncture, the doctor inserts needles into certain meridian points, targeting the affected organs to help them function optimally again. Meta-analysis published in 2021 on Journal of Complementary and Integrative Medicine showed that acupuncture therapy improves sexual dysfunction in men, especially related to libido, erectile dysfunction and impotence.

The literature shows that acupuncture is also effective in reducing some problems with sexual dysfunction in women. Dr. Sing recommends using acupuncture as a form of alternative medicine, but more research is needed.

Cupping helps to remove stagnant gases or substances accumulated in the body, improving blood circulation.

Herbs are used to treat most sexual health problems, restoring balance to organs and the whole body. One herb used to improve sexual function is shiitake mushroom (suo yang). According to Dr. Sing, this mushroom contains natural compounds such as anthocyanins and tannins, which can treat impotence, premature ejaculation and knee pain. Another herb used is Hibiscus flower, which has the effect of tonic yin, enhancing vitality.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is also a way to improve sexual health. The ancient Chinese believed that taking care of the body, also known as nurturing yang (yang sheng) or nurturing life, was showing respect to one’s parents.
