Hundreds of hectares of “Mai An Tiem Watermelon – Nga Son specialty” are being hurriedly harvested by locals. This year has just had a good season, a good price, and a profit of tens of millions per pole, watermelon growers are extremely excited.
These days, in many communes of Nga Son district (Thanh Hoa), farmers are entering the watermelon harvest.
Watermelon in Nga Son district was allowed by Thanh Hoa province’s People’s Committee to use the place name “Nga Son” to register a collective trademark “Mai An Tiem Watermelon – Nga Son specialty”.
This year, Nga Son watermelon has a high yield (good season – PV), 1 pole for harvesting from 1.5-1.7 tons. With a selling price ranging from 8,000-9,000 VND/kg (twice last year), minus investment costs, each sao brings growers about 10 million VND.
According to local people, the watermelon season starts from February to June of the lunar calendar (divided into 2 planting seasons).
In order to harvest melons, households contribute their efforts to exchange for each other’s harvest, and import for traders is also faster.
Ms. Ngo Thi Thuy (Nga Trung commune, Nga Son district) shared that the first crop of melons in her family took more than 70 days to harvest, but the next crop only took more than 50 days, with each pole minus the costs and expenses. profit more than 10 million dong.

According to statistics of the People’s Committee of Nga Son district, this year’s watermelon crop, planted on more than 200 hectares of land, is currently in the harvest period.
Nga Son watermelon is associated with the legend of Mai An Tiem (adopted son of the 18th Hung King) and was married to Mi Nuong (ie Ba Cho). Then, because of displeasing the king, Mai An Tiem’s family was exiled to a deserted island (now Nga Son, Thanh Hoa). Here, by chance, he created a precious watermelon variety, so he is considered the ancestor of watermelon farming in Vietnam.
Traders go to the fields to buy products for farmers and then distribute them to the northern provinces for consumption.
According to the People’s Committee of Nga Son district, the government has been developing a plan to bring the brand “Mai An Tiem Watermelon- Nga Son Specialty” into an OCOP product.
According to local people, Nga Son watermelons are large, round and beautiful in color because they are grown on sandy soil.
