Should graduates work for a large corporation or a startup? This is the advice of CEO Le Diep Kieu Trang and billionaire Jack Ma

According to statistics from the Department of Market Development and Science and Technology Enterprises and Project 844 Office (Ministry of Science and Technology), in 2021, Vietnam’s innovative startup ecosystem will record 88 investment deals with a total value of more than 1.3 billion USD. Vietnam has become a rising star in the Southeast Asian market. Vietnamese startups have made their mark with spectacular fundraising in the past year. In which, there are deals amounting to hundreds of millions of dollars. Startup MoMo also officially became the new “unicorn” of Vietnam, with a valuation of over 2 billion USD after the 5th round of funding (Series E) with an investment of about 200 million USD.

With the strong development of Vietnamese startups, young people now have more choices when it comes to working. Of course, they still have a dilemma when choosing between working for a large corporation or a startup. Is there any difference?

In an interview, businesswoman Le Diep Kieu Trang analyzed in detail:

Working in a large corporation will have many opportunities to be trained in depth, professionally, with a clear work structure. Joining a startup again depends on the stage of company development. If you enter early, you can do a lot of things, from sales, marketing to human resources. The company grows fast, there will be more to do, but if the business stands still, you run the risk of becoming an administrative generalist.

But with large foreign startups coming to Vietnam, the slow-moving period is very short because their capital is already strong enough. These companies also have a clear departmental structure, staff with professional experience like large corporations. When working at a large startup, you will work closely with the regional team, learn from foreign markets and take advantage of their strengths.

In large corporations, the process is very clear. You can do what everyone else has done and still see steady growth of 5-10%. But at a startup, if you don’t experiment with something new, it’s impossible to grow several times after a year as expected. There are many opportunities to learn through real work. You have the right to come up with an idea and execute it, but there are responsibilities, and the pressure of performance is huge.

The career development path in a large corporation is also clear as after 3 years, you will advance to a certain position. Startup is not like that but develops a lot of new services and products and needs the head of that segment. In the market, these positions are not easy to find because they are completely new things in Vietnam. At the startup company, who adapts to change the fastest, who has the courage to build new products, accept challenges and take responsibility will be chosen.“.

So it can be said that when working at a startup, you learn, experiment, change, but also bear great pressure and responsibility. Going to work to learn and grow is the common view of many successful people from billionaire Jack Ma to Mobile World chairman Nguyen Duc Tai.

Billionaire Jack Ma once outlined a career plan for young people within 30 years. He thinks that between the ages of 20 and 30 you should follow a good boss and join a good company to learn how to do things the right way. When you are 30-40 years old, if you want to do something yourself, do it now. At this point, you are still strong enough to withstand failure. After the age of 40, Jack Ma believes that people should start prioritizing their own stability, family and next generation. Instead of jumping into a new field, he says, “when you’re 40-50, you should focus on what you’re good at.” When you turn 50-60 years old, it is a period of time to train and develop the young generation, the next generation.

The Alibaba founder believes that people in their 20s and 30s are “the luckiest” because they still have a lot to learn. He advises young people to find their own path instead of setting goals and aspirations based on other people’s success stories.

Thus, there is no general answer to the question “Should I work at a large corporation or a startup?”. The answer depends on the personality, goals of each person and it is important that you have the spirit of learning instead of just working to earn money.
