The most expensive cars in the world ever sold at auction

1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé – $143,000,000

One of two 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupés has just been sold for $143 million. In other words, it’s almost $100 million higher than the previous record.

This SLR is based on the two-time world championship W196R Grand Prix car driven by F1 legend Juan Manuel Fangio. However, it has a larger 3-liter engine meant for motorsports races. In 1955, it won the World Sportscar Championship.

Ferrari 250 GTO 1962 – $48,405,000

This 250 GTO was sold by RM Sotheby’s at the end of August 2018. It is the third GTO ever built, has been raced worldwide and won numerous awards. Some of these victories include the 1962 Italian GT championship and class victories in the 1963 and 64 Targo Florio.

This GTO is also periodically upgraded by Scaglietti, both under the hood and on the surface. That converted it from a possible Series I to a much rarer Series II.

Ferrari 250 GTO Berlinetta 1962 – $ 38,115,000

This car uses a 3-liter V12 Colombo V13 engine, producing only about 300 horsepower. It was the 19th GTO out of 36 ever produced and it finished second at the 1962 Tour de France.

Until this car was sold by Bonhams in 2014, it had been owned by the same family for 49 consecutive years.

Ferrari 335S 1956 – 35,730,510 USD

This 1956 Ferrari 335 S was sold by Artcurial in February 2016. It is just one of four 335 S models ever built, making it one of the rarest cars ever produced. It is equipped with a 4.1-liter V12 engine with 400 horsepower and a top speed of nearly 300km/h. That speed is blazing fast even by today’s standards.

Mercedes-Benz W196R 1954 – $29.6 million

This 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R was sold at an auction in Bonhams in July 2013. It holds great significance for German racing.

W196R gave Juan Manuel Fangio his second Formula 1 Drivers’ World Championship. The company produced only 14 W196s and only 10 survive to this day. Currently, Mercedes owns six of them.

Ferrari 290 MM 1956 – $28,050,000

This 1956 Ferrari 290 MM was sold by RM Sotheby’s in December 2015, which means it makes a very nice Christmas present from someone.

It was one of only four 290 MMs ever produced. This particular car was built for Juan Manuel Fangio. He finished 4th behind the wheel of this car at the 1956 Millie Miglia. That may not sound like a big deal, but you should remember 426 cars took part in the race that year. It was powered by a 3.5-liter V12 engine. liter produces more than 320 horsepower.

Ferrari 275 GTB / 4 * S NART Spider 1967 – $ 27,500,000

This 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4*S NART Spider was sold by RM Sotheby’s in August 2013. It was originally built as a Spider version of the 275 GTB coupe, produced at the request of a Ferrari dealer in North America.

Only 10 NART Spiders were ever built, 15 fewer than originally planned. NART stands for North American Racing Team, which is run by Luigi Chinetti. Underneath the gorgeous exterior is the same V12 engine and transmission as the 275 Coupe.

Ferrari 275 GTB / C Speciale 1964 – $26.400.000

This 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale was sold by RM Sotheby’s in August 2014. While not highly valued, it is indeed rarer than its 250 GTO brother. According to EVO, this Speciale has an ultra-thin alloy body.

Not only was it the first of three 275 GTB/C Specials ever produced, but it was also the first Ferrari equipped with the 3.3-liter Columbo V12.

Aston Martin DBR1 1956 – $22,550,000

This car was sold by RM Sotheby’s in December 2018. It was the official car of the Scuderia Ferrari Works in 1956 and 1957. It completed the podium at Mille Miglia and 1000 km of Buenos Aires. It was actually the last of four 290 MMs built and one of only three that survived. It was restored by the Ferrari Classiche with a 1957 Sebring 12 o’clock paint job.
