Russian man gets 7 months in prison for growing cannabis

Binh ThuanShedko Dmitrii, 34 years old, Russian nationality, was sentenced to 7 months in prison for growing marijuana and possessing more than 3 kg in a rented house in Mui Ne.

On the morning of May 23, Shedko Dmitrii was convicted of a crime by the People’s Court of Binh Thuan province Illegal possession of narcotics under Article 249 of the Penal Code.

According to the indictment, at the end of 2019, Shedko went to Mui Ne to travel and rent a house in Ham Tien ward, Phan Thiet city, to stay. In August 2021, this person went online to order seeds and tools for growing cannabis.

At first, Shedko planted 20 trees. After harvesting, drying for later use, he continued to plant 27 trees. At the end of December 2021, local police discovered that a Russian tourist had planted dozens of cannabis plants in his bedroom and 3 kg of dried cannabis.

In court today, Shedko testified that because her compatriot broke her arm more than a year ago, she grew marijuana to relieve pain, not for trading purposes. The defendant also said that he did not know that this behavior was illegal, and asked the jury to consider reducing the sentence.
