North Korea launches 3 rockets in a row
North Korea launched three rockets believed to be ballistic missiles.
The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JSC) determined the missiles were launched from the Sunan area, Pyongyang, at around 6:00 a.m., 6:37 a.m. and 6:42 a.m. on May 25.
The first missile launched appeared to be an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). The second missile appears to have failed in flight. The third missile is a short-range ballistic missile (SRBM), the South Korean side added.
North Korea has carried out a series of missile launches this year, from hypersonic weapons to test-firing of its largest ICBMs for the first time in nearly five years. Pyongyang is also said to be preparing for the next time nuclear test first since 2017.
US and South Korean officials have previously warned North Korea is ready to test weapons, possibly while President Joe Biden visits Asia, his first visit to the region since he took office with Seoul being a Pit stop.
A White House official said, President Biden was informed of the North Korean missile launch after leaving Japan on the evening of May 24.
Japan recorded at least two launches from North Korea. A missile flying about 750km with a maximum altitude of 50km appears to be able to change its trajectory during flight, according to Japan’s defense minister. A rocket flies about 300km, maximum altitude 550km.
Public broadcaster NHK reported that the rockets fell outside Japan’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).
The US military’s Indo-Pacific Command has information about “sequential launches”. They think that the program North Korean weapons destabilizing but does not pose an immediate threat.
