Discover and capture the first submarine carrying drugs across the Atlantic Ocean

A submarine believed to be carrying around 3.5 tons of cocaine from Colombia was intercepted off the coast of Spain.

The vessel sank when police tried to stop it in the Gulf of Aldan in the Galicia region of northeastern Spain over the weekend. Objects on board are believed to have intentionally submerged it.

Two Ecuadorian nationals were arrested, but another escaped.

Authorities have not been able to confirm the origin or destination of the drugs, but some media reports say police suspect they are from Colombia.

The 20-meter-long submarine was later salvaged and towed into the port of Aldan, with the help of a team of divers and some buoys.

Police divers pulled a pack of cocaine from the submarine on Monday, but authorities believe there are tons of drugs left on board.

Spanish authorities say this is the first time they have discovered a submarine used to smuggle drugs into the country.

They have coordinated with international police forces to monitor these moves in recent days.

In September, a submarine containing 5 tons of cocaine worth about 133 million pounds (equivalent to more than 3,900 billion VND) was seized by the US Coast Guard in the eastern Pacific Ocean.
