Newly elected Philippine president speaks out about the South China Sea
Philippine President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced that he would use the 2016 South China Sea ruling to protect national sovereignty.
“I will not let China trample on a millimeter of Philippine maritime rights. We have a very important ruling in our favor, and we will use it to assert our territorial rights. This is not a claim. This is our right to our territory”, Channel News Asia quoted Marcos Jr as saying today (May 26).
“We are talking about China. We speak with China in a tough tone. However, we cannot go to war with them,” added Marcos Jr.
Mr. Marcos Jr in his speech also said that he would not adopt the “non-traditional approach” of his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte.
“I will seek a balance between the US and China. The Philippines lies among the ‘giants’ in terms of geopolitics. We have to do it our own way. I think our country must find an independent foreign policy, when the Philippines befriends all. That’s the only way,” Mr. Marcos Jr emphasized.
