Writing on Facebook, Albanian President Ilir Meta expressed his “sadness and grief” over Mr Nishani’s passing and stressed: “Mr Nishani will always be remembered as a personality with values. rare, as well as as a leader with integrity and foresight.”

Born in the port city of Durres, Mr. Nishani graduated from the military academy and later the law faculty. He taught at the military academy and then worked in various positions at the Albanian Ministry of Defense.

His political career began in 1991 when he joined the Democratic Party (DP), then was elected to Congress in July 2005. He held the positions of Justice and Interior Minister before taking the presidency for a five-year term (2012-2017).

Albania, with a population of 2.8 million, is one of the poorest countries in Europe. Persistent political tensions and partisan conflicts that have lasted since 1990 are one of the reasons hindering Albania’s efforts to join the European Union (EU). During his lifetime, Mr. Nishani made efforts to help this small Balkan country overcome difficulties and challenges on the way to EU integration.
