The place to go back and forth of ‘customers’ for 35 years
The Bay Duc racket cafe owned by Mrs. Vo Thi Duc (76 years old) has existed on the land of Bien Hoa for more than 50 years. The shop faces the Dong Nai river, has no fancy signs, just over a dozen plastic tables and chairs, but still attracts a lot of “followers” who are addicted to coffee.
Opening from 3 am, Ms. Bay is always busy with hot batches of coffee to serve guests from far away. Mr. Hoang Ngoc (54 years old), just sipping hot coffee said: “I take a boat to carry goods from Long An, every time I cross the Dong Nai river, I have to stop and drink a cup of Mrs. Bay’s coffee to prevent crushing”.
It is known that this is one of the few last remaining racket cafes in Bien Hoa. Hoai Nhung (45 years old) shared: “Since coming back to this land to set up a business, I have been looking for a new place to find this shop that sells coffee mixed with a racket”.
In terms of mixing, first, the cloth rackets are boiled with boiling water by the owner to soften and clean. Next, add a sufficient amount of coffee and then slowly pour in boiling water. Finally, use a spoon to stir until the coffee is cooked and bubbly.
Then, take the coffee from the first batch and pour it back into the racket and add some boiling water. Continue doing this until the 4th time to pour out the coffee with enough aroma and taste.
Although 50 years have passed, Bay Duc coffee still retains its flavor with a traditional cloth rack. The owner said: “Times have changed, many coffee shops of the same time have changed to filter making, but I am still loyal to the profession of stirring coffee by hand.”
Thanks to keeping the old brewing techniques and reasonable prices, the racket cafe retains long-time customers. Mr. Tin (60 years old) said: “I have gone everywhere to enjoy coffee, but I always choose this place to stop. I have been with inertia for more than 35 years now, from 1,000 VND/cup to 19,000 VND/cup.”
Recalling her decades of living on the land of Bien Hoa, Ms. Bay Duc confided: “Thanks to this land and toad shop, I have raised 5 well-educated and successful children”.
