Lewandowski can use the law to leave Bayern

According to German newspaper Bild, striker Robert Lewandowski will take legal action that no star has applied, to terminate his contract with Bayern a year early.

Under article 17 of the FIFA Regulations, any player who signs a contract with a club before the age of 28 has the right to purchase the remainder of the contract three years after it was signed. If the player is over 28 years old, then the period is reduced to two years.

Bild emphasized, Lewandowski’s agent Pini Zahavi knows this clause well. Lewandowskinow 33 years old, has played for Bayern since 2014. Pursuant to the above regulations, the Polish striker is eligible to buy back the last year of his contract with Bayern.

This rule is also known as “Webster’s law”, after former Scotland midfielder Andy Webster. In 2016, Webster set a precedent when he became the first player to apply this clause to tear off his contract with Hearts of Midlothian and join Wigan.

If “Webster’s law” applies, Lewandowski will have to compensate for Bayern salary of the last year of the contract, about 26 million USD. This figure is significantly lower than the $ 35 million fee that Barca sent Bayern.

Follow Bild, no top player has applied “Webster’s law” to leave the club. This source emphasized, if Lewandowski chooses to leave Bayern in such a negative way, Lewandowski will be seriously affected both in terms of his reputation as well as his chances in the next Balloon voting and individual awards.

At the end of May, Lewandowski publicly announced his intention to leave Bayern in the summer of 2022. Then it was Zahavi’s turn to pressure Bayern with the above statements. Bild: “For Lewandowski, Bayern is history. Lewandowski wants to leave after giving his best for eight years. Now, almost 34 years old, Lewandowski wants to join the club he has always dreamed of. Why did Bayern turn it down? No one cares about money, neither me nor Lewandowski.”

Barca is considered the most potential destination of Lewandowski. Coach Xavi once admitted he is interested in the best player in FIFA 2020 and 2021. But the biggest barrier is the salary fund, when La Liga president Javier Tebas confirmed Barca must sell off players if they want to sign Lewandowski next season.

Lewandowski joined Bayern from Dortmund in the summer of 2014 and dominated with the Bavarian team Bundesliga during the last eight seasons, winning a Champions League, a European Super Cup, a FIFA Club World Cup.

On a personal level, Lewandowski scored 344 goals in 375 matches, won two European Golden Shoes, two FIFA Best Player titles, seven Bundesliga top scorers, one Champions League top scorer. Except for the first season scoring 25 goals, the 33-year-old striker has contributed at least 40 goals in the remaining seven seasons.
