Explosion at chemical plant in India, many casualties
At least nine people were killed in an explosion this morning (June 4) at a chemical plant in Hapur, Uttar Pradesh state, northern India, Hindustan Times reported.
Police spokesman Surendra Singh said it was a boiler explosion at a factory in the Dhaulana industrial park, about 60km from the capital New Delhi.
At least 19 other people were injured in the incident, the Hindustan Times reported. According to spokesman Singh, the death toll could increase as some people were seriously injured.
Earlier, in April this year, an explosion also occurred in a chemical factory in the western state of Gujarat, India, killing six people.
According to local police, the explosion happened at the facility located in Dahej industrial area in Bharuch district, about 255km south of Gandhinagar.
Police said the incident happened when a reactor near where the victims were working suddenly exploded during solvent distillation.
