The US and Korea help Vietnam transition to clean energy
USAID and KOICA sign the first memorandum of understanding in Vietnam on climate change, environmental protection, and helping Vietnam accelerate the transition to clean energy.
On June 8, Country Director of the International Development Agency America (USAID) Ann Marie Yastishock and Korea International Development Agency (KOICA) Country Director Cho Han Deog signed the first memorandum of understanding between the two agencies on cooperation in pollution reduction and climate change in the Delta Mekong River and assist Vietnam in accelerating its transition to clean energy.
“The United States is committed to working with global partners to work together to address the climate crisis. We are pleased to partner with KOICA to realize a common goal with Vietnam towards an environmentally sustainable future” – Country Director USAID Yastishock spoke.
“Action for the climate and environment is considered the focus of KOICA’s development cooperation activities. I believe we will make our efforts to save the planet more effective through cooperation rather than acting alone,” said KOICA Country Director Cho Han Deog.
Through collaborative activities, USAID and KOICA intend to increase the impact and effectiveness of their two agency-funded programs while achieving better and measurable outcomes. given to the people of Vietnam.
The two sides will pursue common development goals including, but not limited to, reducing plastic waste and other types of pollution, and improving solid waste management; promote biodiversity; reduce emissions in agriculture; strengthening adaptation strategies of vulnerable groups in the Mekong Delta; at the same time, promote the development and deployment of renewable energy at the central level and in urban areas.
USAID has a variety of initiatives focused on combating climate change, enhancing environmental security, and protecting the environment in Vietnam. Specifically, supporting the development of the clean energy sector, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting the natural environment including forests and threatened species, mobilizing the participation of local communities for issues related to environmental protection. Environmental pollutionsuch as air pollution, waste management and water conservation.
Since 2010, USAID has provided assistance to Vietnam’s environment and energy sectors. USAID is currently implementing 11 energy and environment projects in Vietnam with a total budget of more than $160 million.
KOICA is committed to fighting Climate Change and promote green growth. KOICA is currently in the process of increasing the list of cooperation projects related to this field. In Vietnam, KOICA pays special attention to areas such as garbage electricity, ocean plastic waste pollution, pollution monitoring, conservation and sustainable forest management.
KOICA will endeavor to address these issues through cooperation with a variety of partners, including academia, start-ups and private businesses as appropriate.
