11-year-old girl tells about the school shooting in front of the US Congress

Cerrillo, 11, appeared before the US Congress via video call, recounting the process of escaping the attack of gunman Ramos at Texas elementary school.

“He told my teacher ‘good night’ and shot her in the head. He continued to shoot my classmates. When I hid behind my backpack, he shot the friend sitting next to me. Because I thought he’s coming back, I smeared my friend’s blood all over my body,” said Miah Cerrillo, a 4th grader at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Americarecounting the shooting on May 24.

Miah remembers the moment she tried to keep quiet, before using her dead teacher’s cell phone to call 911. “She said she needed help and wanted the police to come to her classroom,” she said.

Police forces in Uvalde are scrutinizing more than 10 police officers waiting outside Miah’s classroom while gunman Salvador Ramos, 18, opened fire.

When asked what she wanted after the attack, Miah said she wanted security. “I don’t want this to happen again,” Miah said, adding that she was still concerned that someone would target her school again.

Miguel Cerrillo, Miah’s father, said she still has nightmares and the bullet wound in her back is slowly healing.

Miah’s account comes as the US Congress is facing increasing pressure to respond to gun violence. The shooting at Uvalde Elementary School and the shooting at a supermarket in Buffalo, upstate New York earlier shook the United States, leading to urgent calls for gun safety reform.
