Baige is an influencer (KOL) and online seller from Luoyang, in Henan province, central China. The 24-year-old girl started traveling with her 74-year-old adoptive father, Zhang Shuangqi, in a car house across China last year to rekindle the father-son relationship and repay the foster father’s kindness.

Baige was abandoned by her biological parents in a field and found by Zhang. After starting her online sales career seven years ago, she helped her adoptive father out of poverty.

However, she sold her company last year to begin a tour around China with her adoptive father in May.

Since then, she has been posting about their lives while traveling together across the country on the Douyin live-streaming platform, attracting more than 4 million followers.

It all started when Zhang found Baige on the side of the road while he was on his way to the fields in the village where he lived in 1997. At this time, the girl was only 4 months old and the adoptive father was in his 50s but still single because of poverty.

“At that time, my father only made 2 yuan (30 US cents) a day by picking up trash. But he spent 1 yuan to get a picture of me, the only photo of me as a child,” Baige recalls in a video she shared on the Douyin platform.

In the following years, the father and son lived on a meager income from farm work and garbage collection. “He collected and sold mostly used plastic and cardboard bottles that were not worth it to get money to help me go to school,” says Baige.

The father and son went to Beijing to see a doctor when Baige fell ill seven years ago, the first time they had left their hometown, she recalls.

“Perhaps that’s when the idea of being able to take him on a trip started to arise,” she said.

She didn’t know she was adopted until a few years ago when she started sharing their lives on social media and some people asked her if she was her father’s biological daughter because they looked so different. together.

She is 170cm tall while her father is only 148cm.

“My adoptive father was not good at expressing himself, but he influenced me with his quiet concern,” Baige said.

Their story became widely known last May when they were invited to participate in a singing talent show on Chinese broadcaster CCTV.

“They all say my daughter is brave and filial to me. I feel very proud,” Zhang said on stage at the time.
