Czech President allows citizens to fight for Ukraine
Czech President Miloš Zeman has just signed a decree allowing more than 100 Czech citizens to participate in Ukraine’s war against the Russian army.
The Ukrinform page cited the announcement on Twitter on May 11 of the spokesman for the Czech President saying that Mr. Zeman had approved 103 citizens to join the war with the armed forces. Ukraine “based on their application filed under Law 855/2004 on military service and military assistance”.
Czech Prime Minister Peter Fiala has not yet officially approved the decision.
“The Prime Minister will sign a document agreeing with the President’s decision to allow Czech citizens to join the Armed Forces of Ukraine in any case, if the application is submitted by three relevant ministries, including the Ministry of Defense and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs have a positive evaluation,” Mr. Fiala’s spokesman told Seznam news agency.
Earlier, Seznam reported, more than 500 Czechs had expressed their readiness to fight for Ukraine.
Earlier in March, Prime Minister Fiala agreed with President Zeman that individuals fighting for Kiev should not be considered criminals. However, the problem lies in the application approval process.
Over the years, Czech authorities have tried and convicted a number of people accused of fighting for Russian proxies in the separatist Donbass region of eastern Ukraine.
Russia has not yet made any comment on Mr. Zeman’s new move.
