U23 Vietnam has successfully defended the SEA Games gold medal, after a 1-0 victory over Thailand in the final match at My Dinh.

Temporarily putting aside the joy of victory, U23 Vietnam immediately packed their bags and set out to attend the U23 Asian Cup finals, which took place from June 1 to 19 in Uzbekistan.

The list that was summoned to prepare for the Asian tournament was largely from the squad that won the SEA Games 31 championship, including: two goalkeepers Van Toan and Quan Van Chuan. The players include: Phan Tuan Tai, Luong Duy Cuong, Bui Hoang Viet Anh, Nguyen Thanh Binh, Vu Tien Long, Le Van Do, Nguyen Van Tung, Huynh Cong Den, Dung Quang Nho, Nguyen Hai Long, Nham Manh Dung and Ly Cong Hoang Anh.

In addition, there is a group of players on the focus list from the previous round but not in the preparation for the last 31 SEA Games. It is known that U23 Vietnam will bring to Uzbekistan with 26 players. Because according to the regulations of this year’s tournament, teams can replace up to 15 people in case of Covid-19.

After the 31st SEA Games, Coach Park Hang Seo also officially stopped leading Vietnam U23. The replacement of the Korean strategist who holds U23 Vietnam to prepare for the 2022 AFC U23 Championship is Coach Gong Oh Kyun – a compatriot of Mr. Park.

The AFC U23 Championship 2022, also known as the 2022 AFC U23 Asian Cup (AFC U23 Asian Cup 2022) is a tournament held every two years for Asian men’s under-23 teams.

16 teams participating in the AFC U23 Championship 2022 include host Uzbekistan and qualifying teams Qatar, Iran, Uzbekistan, Japan, Australia, Kuwait, UAE, Malaysia, Thailand, South Korea, Iraq, Jordan, Turkmenistan, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia and Tajikistan.

Like most tournaments, the 2022 AFC U23 Championship will be played in a round-robin format. The top two teams from each group advance to the quarterfinals.

At the 2022 AFC U23 Championship, U23 Vietnam fell into Group C with U23 Korea and two familiar opponents in the same region, U23 Thailand and U23 Malaysia.

Group A is the appearance of hosts Uzbekistan, Iran, Qatar and Turkmenistan. Group B includes teams from Australia, Jordan, Iraq and Kuwait. Meanwhile, Group D includes Saudi Arabia, UAE, Japan and Tajikistan
