The girl tried to call the police to save her friend before she was shot dead

Amerie Jo was one of 19 children killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas.

In the interview with The Daily Beasther grandmother – Berlinda Irene Arreola said her niece bravely called the police when gunman Salvador Ramos burst into the classroom.

“The gunman came in and said to the kids, ‘You’re going to die.’ Amerie had a phone in hand and she called 911. Instead of snatching the phone, the killer shot her. She was sitting right next to her. My best friend. That girl was also covered in blood.”Ms. Arreola said.

Police confirmed that all 21 victims, 19 children and two teachers were in Amerie Jo’s class. The gunman was later shot dead by response forces.

“My niece was shot dead trying to call 911. She died a hero trying to save herself and her classmates.”Ms. Arreola shared.

The two teachers killed in the May 24 massacre were Eva Mireles and Irma Garcia.

Both female teachers were hailed as heroes for their efforts to shield their students when the gunman frantically opened fire.

The May 24 shooting was the deadliest school attack in the United States in a decade. The incident happened when there were only 2 days left until the students’ summer vacation.

According to information posted on the school’s Facebook account, the students had just visited the zoo and participated in a quiz program before the tragedy. 24/5 is the award day, the children are required to dress well to school.

Robb Elementary School teaches grades 2 through 4. About 90% of the students are Hispanic and about 81% are economically disadvantaged.

Police are still determining the motive for the 18-year-old suspect Salvador Ramos to commit such cruelty.

Earlier, on the afternoon of May 24, Ramos shot and wounded his grandmother before driving to a school with 500 students aged 7-10 years studying and committing the crime. He was shot dead by the rapid response force at the scene.

Authorities said the suspect acted alone, without outside help.

The May 24 massacre sparked a wave of calls to tighten gun control in the US, which has been a controversial issue for decades in the country.
