Mark Zuckerberg advises young people to focus on building relationships

Most people know the Facebook story created from Mark Zuckerberg’s dorm room, but the lesson is not there.

In a recent Podcast by computer engineer Lex Fridman (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Zuckerberg said he couldn’t find Facebook in 2004 not by dropping out of school or giving up other interests. It was because of the personal relationship he had at school.

“Who you hang out with,” Zuckerberg said, “is the most important decision” a college student can make. “You become the same person as the people around you,” he explains, “I think maybe in general, people are so focused on their goals that they aren’t invested enough in their relationships and the people they’re with. building”.

Zuckerberg met other Facebook founders – Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Andrew McCollum while the five were at Harvard University. The company they founded has revolutionized the social media industry and has become one of the biggest businesses in the world today. Meta – Facebook’s parent company – currently has a market cap of $582.5 billion.

Zuckerberg says he always prioritizes relationships over goals. This is especially true when recruiting. While evaluating candidates, Zuckerberg imagined what it would be like to work for that person, instead of imagining himself as their boss.

“I only hire people to work for me if I see myself capable of working for them,” he said.

Zuckerberg said the strategy has created a cohesive and productive work environment. If you work with like-minded people, you will achieve your common goals more smoothly. It’s a matter of finding a personal match, he says, not “choosing friends or lovers.”

Prioritizing relationships over goals also partially explains some of Zuckerberg’s controversial decisions when leading Meta. For example, in 2016, in a letter to employees, he explained that Peter Thiel – a supporter of former US President Donald Trump during the election campaign – remained on the board. At that time, almost the entire technology world supported Hillary Clinton.

Zuckerberg said that Facebook “can’t create a corporate culture that says they care about diversity, but then eliminates half of its people just because they support a certain political candidate.”

Many critics argue that Zuckerberg’s retention of Thiel, an early investor in Facebook, may have influenced the way Facebook monitored, or ignored, misinformation on the social network prior to the meeting, which is running for the 2016 and 2020 elections. Wall Street Journal once revealed that Thiel was part of a group that pressured Zuckerberg not to double-check political ads on his platform.
