Having existed for 30 years, Ms. Thuy’s hot tofu burden has been attached to many Saigon people.

The dish is simple, familiar and ubiquitous, but hot tofu Bui Vien has a strange attraction. Carrying street vendors with a “signboard” made of laminated paper “hot tofu Miss Thuy” and a few plastic chairs can become a place for friends to meet up and have a “eight” conversation.

The cargo is located at the intersection of Do Quang Dau and Bui Vien, so you can easily identify it. In addition, the tofu load always makes passers-by look curious because the shop is surprisingly crowded. There are customers eating at the place, there are also people stopping to buy and take away, so it is always crowded with people coming and going.

The shop has many regular customers, also because some people think that “Once you eat here, you don’t want to eat anywhere else”. Because it is located in the Western Quarter, this small tofu burden also attracts many Westerners.

Each type of tofu has its own delicious flavor, you can order several different types to enjoy.

Every day the shop starts selling at about 4 pm until late at night. Previously, the shop sold about 500 cups a day on average. In recent years, due to the increasing number of customers, the owner has to cook 2 more boxes to be enough, counting on selling thousands of cups a day. It looks like a huge pot of tofu, but it’s sold out for a while.

Unlike many other Saigon tofu shops that add plaster to create toughness, the tofu here is naturally soft and fatty. Each grain of beans is both white and smooth, just looking at it is enough to make you crave it. In addition, the owner always keeps the heat with a charcoal stove or a heat-tight container. Therefore, the food is always hot, delicious and attractive.

However, the highlight of Bui Vien’s hot tofu bowl in Ms. Thuy’s restaurant must be the sugar water made by herself. To make sugar water, she only uses rock sugar combined with jaggery cooked on a low fire to create an eye-catching golden light and a very pleasant sweet taste. In addition, she also added a bunch of pandan leaves and slices of ginger to bring a faint aroma and a characteristic warm taste.

Unlike traditional tofu that only has tofu with sugar water, tofu here has many more “toppings” that you can choose from. For example, add a little rich coconut milk, or chewy pearls, or replace the sugar water with soy milk.

Each cup of hot tofu costs from 8,000 VND. Because it’s so cheap, many people immediately order 2-3 cups to eat for good. Because it is a sidewalk restaurant, seating is quite limited, you can buy takeout if you feel uncomfortable eating at the restaurant.
