The attack took place on October 31 on a subway train bound for Tokyo’s Shinjuku station. Hattori wore a green shirt, blue vest, and purple coat like the Joker, the villain in the Batman movies, leading many passengers to think he was dressed up for Halloween.

However, as the train approached Kokuryo station, Hattori suddenly pulled out a knife and stabbed a 70-year-old man in the right chest, then swung the knife wildly, and poured an oil-like liquid from a plastic bottle onto the floor and set it ablaze, setting fire to the seat on the train. burnt. The Tokyo Fire Department said 17 passengers were injured in the attack, three of them seriously.

Hattori left his hometown of Fukuoka for Tokyo at the end of September, months after leaving the company where he worked for three years. Sources say Hattori is deeply in debt, having stayed in hotels in the cities of Kobe and Nagoya.

In Tokyo, Hattori buys a Joker-like costume, lighter gasoline, and bug spray. According to the investigator’s statement, the suspect prepared gasoline to be burned on the train, indicating that this was a premeditated attack. Hattori also admitted that he had failed at work and had problems with his friends, and admired the character of the Joker.
