The film focuses on describing the tragic life of Men because of “not being a true woman”. However, the film squandered its full potential by a predictable and dated script. In fact, the image of “insinuated” boys is not new because a series of works on this topic have aired such as: 3D Village (2017), Lottery (2017).
This is even a “specialty” feature in the West at the moment. Therefore, the fact that the film still exploits the image of people of the LGBT world that is ridiculous and fierce to make laughs seems to be no longer appropriate. The scenes of noisy and tumultuous quarrels, especially the swearing screen like reading a dozen lines of Men’s poetry in a row, did not bring the necessary effect. Fortunately, Vo Dang Khoa has reduced these details on the big screen.
Meanwhile, Men’s tragedies do not necessarily come from the fact that she belongs to the LGBT community. The process of conflict with the stepfather has nothing to do with Men’s gender. The biggest pain is probably that she couldn’t give birth to her husband, but was explained in a strange way by the film. Even the work does not clearly show the discrimination people have for her except for a few gentle curses. The biggest plus point in Western Girlfriend perhaps it is the uniform acting of the cast. Vo Dang Khoa has an outstanding role when he has obvious restraint but still shows the gentleness and femininity in a man’s body. After putting on makeup and putting on a trio, Men had a complete makeover compared to the previous image of a “bad boy” student, making it difficult for the audience to recognize. He also acted in the tragic and fierce scenes of Men very well.
Anh Tu’s Binh An is faithful in love but still has his own naughty and personality instead of being blind. After a period of absence, Hoai Linh’s role has a melancholy color without any comedy compared to before. Names like Ngan Quynh, Quoc Cuong, People’s Artist Kim Xuan or Dai Nghia all played their roles and played their roles in Men’s life story.
