Using Galaxy S22 for work instead of laptop, why not?
Introduced at the Galaxy Unpacked 2022 event, the Galaxy S22 series consisting of 3 versions: Galaxy S22, Galaxy S22+ and Galaxy S22 Ultra became one of the “technological phenomena” in early 2022. According to Samsung’s previously announced, total number of pre-orders for the Galaxy series S22 in distribution channels and agents nationwide (only in Vietnam) recorded a 2.5-fold increase over its predecessor. This bodes well for the Galaxy S22 series this year, especially the Ultra version with the most changes and upgrades.
Even though it is a smartphone for communication and entertainment needs, have you ever wondered what it would be like to use a high-end phone like the Galaxy S22 for work?
If you think that smartphones are just “content consuming” devices (referring to products with no or little ability to work and generate income), you may be wrong. This may be true for many other smartphones on the market, but with Samsung, users can fully work in a completely normal way on their own smartphones.
Works with Galaxy S22, why not?
First, it should be clearly stated that the Galaxy S22 is Samsung’s most advanced product line to date and is equipped with the most powerful technology and hardware on the market. In particular, with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, users will have a device with a beautiful design, a very high quality QHD+ 120Hz LTPO display, and the most powerful performance on the market thanks to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, along with it. S Pen that no other smartphone has.
With its rugged configuration, the Galaxy S22, especially the Galaxy S22 Ultra, looks like a mini version of the Galaxy Tab S8 series, which is a line of tablets that Samsung invests in for entertainment and creativity, for learning and working in the most optimal way. .
As a tech editor, I often use my Galaxy S22 Ultra to brainstorm articles. In the past I used a laptop to get my work done, but with the Galaxy S22 Ultra, I can now leave the big laptop at home and just take my phone with me.
Using a virtual keyboard on a mobile phone to type is impossible, especially when you need to type fast, type a lot and require high accuracy, today’s smartphone virtual keyboard is really a disaster. Therefore, instead of using the virtual keyboard to type text, I use the S Pen to sketch ideas, which is convenient and comfortable to be creative with different colors. This job can actually use a virtual keyboard, but if you have a pen in hand, why not use it? After all, using a pen to be creative is still better than typing right, it’s also a virtual key!
After that, the article ideas are compiled and I will improve them step by step. This is also when the power of the Galaxy S22 begins to unfold.
Samsung DeX: Turn your phone into a computer in 2 seconds
Samsung DeX is a Samsung-exclusive mode featured on the high-end product line (Galaxy S, Galaxy Note, Galaxy Z, and Galaxy Tab S). In this mode, users can turn their phone into a real computer, work with a TV, separate monitor, or even another computer.
When in DeX mode, Samsung provides users with a computer-like interface, with many computer-like features, such as a well-organized home screen, with application shortcuts, a Taskbar with running applications, and a status bar on the left. … In addition, DeX also supports multi-application window mode, split screen and works with mouse and mouse keyboard.
DeX provides a user interface similar to that of a computer: supports multi-application windows, split screen, has a taskbar and status bar…
After the idea process, since I also have a split screen, I chose to go with the Galaxy S22 Ultra with a split screen. Now just find a USB-C cable that supports image output (if your monitor supports a USB-C port, or just find a universal hub that can connect your smartphone to the monitor). , I can use the Galaxy S22 UItra as a desktop computer.
In DeX mode, the Galaxy S22 screen will function as a touch pad (trackpad). Using the phone’s “trackpad” is a bit difficult at first and will take some getting used to. However, you can opt for a wireless keyboard and mouse combo, connect via Bluetooth directly to the phone and can be used as a computer.
Through initial experience, the Galaxy S22 with DeX mode worked exactly as I expected. The user interface is impeccable, especially with a compact smartphone. DeX mode will provide an interface similar to when using the Galaxy Tab S8 series, i.e. you can perform basic traditional laptop tasks on the Galaxy S22 itself: surf the web, multitask, apps, type with Office apps, watch YouTube/Netflix fine- fine or even play games.
Using Adobe Lightroom to edit photos is pretty smooth
Tips for exploring the desktop interface in Google Chrome browser with DeX mode.
– From the URL bar, access “chrome://flag”
– Search by keyword “Desktop”
– In options “Global settings for requesting desktop sites on Android”switch to “Enabled”
– Restart Google Chrome browser
– Access Settings > Site Settings > scroll down select “Website for computers” and enable this option
At this point, all visited websites will return to the desktop interface.
Samsung DeX limitations on Galaxy S22
With the Galaxy S22, I can forget about the laptop for a while. While the experience of working with the Galaxy S22 is something new and I can really get used to, there are still limitations that I only discovered when using the Galaxy S22 for work.
Firstly, even though the configuration is quite robust (my version has 12GB RAM, 256GB memory), when using DeX to surf the web, I experience frequent webpage reloading even though the browser only has about 5 – 7 tabs open. It seems that the application “eats” so much RAM that the tabs in the Chrome browser don’t have enough memory not to reload.
The next limitation comes from the supported screen resolutions. Despite the poor configuration, when using DeX with monitors and TVs, the maximum resolution DeX supports is Full HD (1920 x 1080). I have a 4K monitor and when connected using DeX, the image appears quite blurry.
Apart from that, there is another long-standing issue that Samsung is still gradually addressing, namely the optimal ability of Android and apps to work in a DeX environment. After experiencing DeX on previous Galaxy Note10 series devices and up to the Galaxy S22 series, I can confirm that DeX is getting better, but it’s undeniable that Samsung hasn’t been able to optimize itself to interface using DeX. There will still be some minor bugs that you will only notice while using it, this is because Android was not developed to be used as a tablet or laptop.
Coming soon when Google develops a version of Android for tablets, we can see the DeX interface will be even more perfect. Thus narrowing the gap between smartphones, tablets and laptops.
